Check the person, place and time window.

Recipient
Check the recipient and map information.
What this tells youYou know who receives the location information and what the card represents.
Check whether it is a sent place, an old point or a continuing sharing state. The fictional map here contains no real location data.
- 02
Participation
Review any active sharing state in your own app.
What this tells youYou have inspected the actual state in your own app, where the feature is offered.
Read the current duration, recipients and device permission. If the feature is absent, a similar-looking map card elsewhere does not prove live sharing.
- 03
Stop sharing
Stop sharing when the agreed purpose ends.
What this tells youYou have ended your own continuing session when its agreed purpose finishes.
Use the current stop control if offered, then check the resulting state. An earlier sent point or saved image is a separate record.
A place card is not always a live session.
| Information | What it can represent | Question to check |
|---|---|---|
| Sent place | A point selected or sent at a particular time. | What place and time does this card actually describe? |
| Continuing sharing | Updates during an active session, where supported. | Who receives it, for how long, and how do I stop it? |
| Sharing ended | The app reports that this session has stopped. | Could earlier location information still remain in the chat? |
| Profile or number | An account identifier or contact detail. | Where is the authorized location data source? An identifier supplies none by itself. |
Ending updates does not unsend an old point.
An old map point does not establish someone’s current location.
Sharing active · example
A fictional continuing session is shown for an agreed meeting. Recipient AL and the example time window are visible.
Sharing ended · example
The illustrated session is stopped. A previously sent place card may remain; it is not evidence of a current location.
A location agreement needs an ending.
Agree on a narrow purpose
Identify the recipient and reason before sharing. Agree when access ends instead of treating consent as indefinite.
Define the scope of consent →Inspect your own current state
Check the app’s offered sharing control and relevant device permission. Review account access if the session is unfamiliar.
Review unfamiliar access →Someone promises location from a number
Ask for the authorized data source. A simulation or progress bar does not establish a connection to a person.
Understand identifier claims →State what the evidence actually says.
“A place was sent earlier” and “an active session is updating now” are different observations. Never present an old point as proof of where another person currently is.
Keep this boundary.
A profile or phone number is not a live-location feed.
Feature availability and controls can change. These map states illustrate the distinction; they do not assert that live sharing is available to every Messenger account today.
