GUIDE 07 / 30 · ENCRYPTED HISTORY

Why is Messenger
asking for a PIN?

The prompt may be asking for a method to restore end-to-end encrypted chat history from secure storage. Depending on what was set up and is offered to your account, recovery may use a PIN, a saved recovery code or a linked Apple/Google key.

02 / PUT IT IN CONTEXT

One prompt. Different kinds of access.

A secure-storage PIN is different from an account password or SMS login code; a recovery code is different again.

What you seeWhat it is forWhat to keep separate
Secure-storage PINRestoring saved encrypted history, where set up.Your account password.
Account passwordSigning in to your account.A successful login does not itself restore history.
SMS login codeAn account sign-in or security check. Not the same as a storage PIN.
Saved recovery code / cloud keyAn alternative only when set up and offered.Use your own method through the official flow.
03 / PRACTICAL CHECK

Keep the layers separate.

  1. 01

    Official prompt

Confirm the prompt appears in Messenger or messenger.com.

    What this tells you

You are checking the official prompt.

A request in an unrelated chat-viewer page is not a recovery route.

  2. 02

    Your PIN

Choose only a recovery method shown for your account and that you set up or control.

    What this tells you

The method belongs to your own account.

Use only the choices the official app offers; they are alternatives, not a sequence everyone must complete.

  3. 03

    Alternatives

If none is available, preserve any device that still shows the history and read the reset warning before acting.

    What this tells you

An existing copy stays available while you decide.

Keep the working device intact. Read the reset consequences before changing secure storage.

CHOOSE YOUR SITUATION

Use the option you actually have.

These are alternative situations. You do not need to complete all three.

Your recovery method is available

Use the method offered by the official prompt for your account. Keep it private.

Understand secure storage →

History is still on another device

Preserve that access while you review the recovery options offered to you.

Review the alternatives →

No method is available

Read the reset warning before acting. Deleting secure storage can permanently remove saved history.

Read the reset boundary →
04 / A LIMIT THAT MATTERS

Keep this boundary.

Never enter a PIN, code or cloud-account password on this guide site or a chat-viewer page.

Preserve any device that still contains your history. A storage reset is not a shortcut around a missing recovery method.
