Make the arrangement understandable to everyone.
- 01
Agreement
Agree whose data is shared and why.
What this tells youThe people involved can describe whose information is shared and for what purpose.
Name a concrete concern and the smallest useful scope. A vague request to “keep everyone safe” does not define ongoing access to private conversations.
- 02
Controls
Choose controls each person understands.
What this tells youThe selected controls match the agreement and are understood by the people affected.
Review the actual device or account controls together where appropriate. Explain what remains private and avoid collecting passwords or codes as a shortcut.
- 03
Review
Review the arrangement and end access when appropriate.
What this tells youThere is a review point and a clear way to end the arrangement.
Check whether the original purpose still applies. When agreed access ends, review the relevant sessions, sharing settings and any copies you were authorized to keep.
A useful agreement answers four questions.
| Question | Specific agreement | Boundary to retain |
|---|---|---|
| Whose information? | Name the account or device owner and the participants. | A family role is not automatic access to every account. |
| For what purpose? | Identify a concrete concern and the information needed. | Do not expand a preview check into private-chat monitoring. |
| Which controls? | Explain what the chosen setting changes and leaves private. | Keep passwords, PINs and codes with their owner. |
| Until when? | Agree a review point and how access ends. | Do not let a temporary arrangement become indefinite by default. |
From a broad request to a narrow agreement.
A family agreement about notifications differs from secret access to another adult’s conversations.
“Help me with privacy”
The request is too broad to establish access to conversations. First clarify the device, concern and scope.
One agreed preview check
The fictional participants review notification visibility together, use a harmless message and end the session afterwards.
Turn the agreement into a bounded task.
The concern is visible notifications
Check only the agreed screens with a harmless message. Keep unrelated conversations out of the test.
Review preview privacy →The concern is unwanted contact
Discuss available contact controls and their effects. Let the authorized person choose the appropriate boundary.
Compare contact controls →The purpose has ended
End agreed access and review any relevant sharing state. Do not retain access simply because it was once permitted.
Review responsible use →Ask each person to describe the same plan.
Who is involved, what will be checked, what will stay private and when will it end? If the answers differ, clarify the agreement before using a control.
Keep this boundary.
Family status is not blanket permission to enter private accounts.
Use age-appropriate official controls and explain their scope. This guide does not grant permission or replace the account owner’s boundaries.
