GUIDE 11 / 30 · MESSAGE SIGNALS

Messenger sent,
delivered and seen

A status reports a stage of the message interaction. Use the app’s current explanation and avoid turning a receipt into a judgment about the recipient’s intentions.

PRACTICAL CHECK

Read the label before the story.

  1. 01

    Visible cue

Identify the icon or label next to your message.

    What this tells you

A label belongs to a particular message, not to the whole relationship.

Check the message and time together. A later message can still be pending while an earlier one has a receipt.

  2. 02

    Meaning

Check the current Help explanation for that status.

    What this tells you

The current explanation is more useful than matching a symbol from an old screenshot.

The ticks and monogram in this guide are illustrative. Your app may use a different icon treatment.

  3. 03

    Follow-up

Follow up through an agreed channel if the matter is urgent.

    What this tells you

An agreed follow-up channel gives you a way to clarify the practical issue.

A lack of reply is not evidence of intent. Avoid repeated test messages or monitoring someone’s activity.

COMPARE THE EVIDENCE

Three stages. Three different questions.

Visible cueWhat it tells youWhat it cannot establish
SentThe sending stage succeeded. That the message was delivered or opened.
DeliveredA delivery state is reported for this message. That the recipient has read or understood it.
SeenA reading receipt is shown for this message. Why there is no reply, or when one will arrive.
No new receiptThe visible status has not advanced.Whether a notification was noticed or a boundary was set.
PUT IT IN CONTEXT

A receipt changes. Intent stays unknown.

A delivered message and a seen indicator answer different questions. Neither explains why someone has not replied.

“The plan is ready.” has a delivery label. You still do not have a reading receipt.

The illustrated label now reports a reading receipt. It adds no explanation for a delayed reply.

YOUR NEXT DECISION

Is it a delay, an error or an urgent matter?

A status is unchanged

If there is no failure notice, do not treat a delay as a diagnosis. Read the difference between visibility and receipts.

Review receipt privacy →

The app says it could not send

Use the error and your own connection or account notice to choose the next check.

Check a send failure →

You need a timely answer

Use an already agreed channel and explain what needs a response. A status cannot promise availability.

Understand availability signals →

A useful observation is specific.

“My 09:40 message says Delivered” records what you can see. “They are ignoring me” adds a conclusion the receipt does not support.

A LIMIT THAT MATTERS

Keep this boundary.

Status timing and availability may depend on chat settings.

Do not use activity labels, a missing receipt or a send error as a stand-alone test for blocking.
